Are GMO Foods Bad for You? Risks, Evidence, Safer Swaps

Walk down any grocery aisle in the United States and most of the packaged foods you pass contain ingredients from genetically modified crops. According to the USDA, over 90 percent of the corn, soybeans, and sugar beets grown in the US come from genetically engineered seed. That makes this a question worth answering carefully: are GMO foods actually bad for you, and where do the real risks sit?
As a functional dietitian, I get this question from parents and from women trying to clean up their diets almost every week. The honest answer is more nuanced than either side of the debate usually admits. Here is what the evidence shows, what remains uncertain, and what I recommend to my own clients.
What GMO Foods Are
A genetically modified organism (GMO) is a plant or animal whose DNA has been altered in a laboratory, usually to make a crop resistant to herbicides or to produce its own insecticidal proteins. In the US food supply, the big ones are corn, soy, canola, sugar beets, cottonseed oil, and some varieties of papaya, squash, apples, and potatoes. On US labels you will now see the term “bioengineered” instead of GMO, following the USDA’s National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard.
These ingredients rarely show up as whole foods. They arrive in processed form: corn syrup, soybean oil, soy protein isolate, maltodextrin, sugar, and hundreds of other derivatives that appear in snack foods, cereals, sauces, and drinks.
What Major Scientific Bodies Say
It matters to start here, because it is the strongest part of the evidence base. In 2016 the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine reviewed more than 900 studies and found no substantiated evidence that foods from genetically engineered crops are less safe to eat than their conventional counterparts. The World Health Organization takes a similar position: GM foods currently on the international market have passed safety assessments and are not likely to present risks for human health.
So if you are worried that eating a GMO tomato will alter your own DNA, or that genetic modification itself makes food toxic, the research does not support that fear. The legitimate concerns sit elsewhere, and they deserve attention.
The Real Concerns With GMO Foods
1. Herbicide residues, especially glyphosate
This is the concern I take most seriously in practice. Most GMO crops are engineered to tolerate herbicides, which means those herbicides can be sprayed directly on the crop. Glyphosate use in the US rose sharply after herbicide-tolerant crops were introduced in 1996. In 2015 the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer classified glyphosate as “probably carcinogenic to humans,” a conclusion other regulators, including the EPA and the European Food Safety Authority, have disagreed with. The science is genuinely unsettled, and residues do show up in foods made from these crops.
The practical takeaway: the risk conversation around GMO foods is largely a conversation about the farming system they belong to, not the gene editing itself.
2. They concentrate in ultra-processed foods
GMO ingredients cluster in exactly the foods that already work against your health: refined oils, added sugars, and heavily processed snacks. A diet high in these foods is linked to blood sugar swings, weight gain, and inflammation regardless of how the crops were grown. When my clients cut back on ultra-processed foods, their GMO exposure drops automatically, and that is not a coincidence. It is the same food category.
3. Allergy and labeling questions
Because genetic engineering can introduce new proteins into a food, allergenicity is screened during development, and known allergen transfers have been caught before reaching the market. Still, disclosure in the US remains imperfect. Highly refined ingredients like oils and sugars made from bioengineered crops do not always require a bioengineered label, so you can eat GMO-derived ingredients without ever seeing the word on a package.
4. Environmental and resistance effects
Heavy reliance on a small number of herbicides has driven the rise of resistant weeds, which pushes farms toward more spraying and additional chemicals. This is not a direct dinner-plate risk, but it shapes the residue picture over time and is a fair reason some families choose organic where they can.
Who Should Be Most Careful
In my practice, I pay closest attention to GMO and herbicide exposure for young children, since their detoxification systems and body weight make any residue exposure proportionally larger, and for anyone eating soy or corn derivatives many times per day, which is common with protein bars, shakes, and packaged snacks. If that describes your household, the swaps below matter more for you than for the average eater.
How to Reduce Your Exposure Without Obsessing
- Build meals around whole foods. Vegetables, fruits, legumes, eggs, fish, and quality meats are either non-GMO or far less likely to carry residues than processed derivatives.
- Choose organic for the big four when budget allows: corn, soy, canola, and sugar. Certified organic crops cannot be grown from genetically engineered seed and cannot be sprayed with glyphosate.
- Look for the USDA Organic seal or the Non-GMO Project Verified butterfly if avoiding GMOs matters to you. The bioengineered disclosure on its own will not catch everything.
- Read protein powder and bar labels closely. Soy protein isolate and corn syrup solids are among the most common GMO-derived ingredients in “health” products.
- Do not let perfect be the enemy of good. A conventionally grown vegetable is still a far better choice than an organic cookie.
The Bottom Line
The genetic modification process itself has not been shown to make food dangerous. The stronger concerns are the herbicide residues that ride along with GMO farming and the fact that these ingredients concentrate in ultra-processed foods. Eat mostly whole foods, choose organic strategically for corn, soy, canola, and sugar, and your exposure falls to a level I am comfortable with for my own family and my clients.
